World Tuna Day came into being when it was discovered that tuna is being fished at an alarming rate and something needs to be done to conserve tuna stocks and to stop overfishing.
Tuna is responsible for the food security of a number of countries and many livelihoods depend on it. Its nutritional properties and distinctive taste have made it popular globally and demand for tuna is at an all-time high, because of which it is being fished at a rate that is not biologically sustainable.
Efforts need to be made to conserve the tuna fish and to raise awareness of this issue.
